Speed cited as factor in deadly accident

SADDLETREE — A St. Pauls woman and a passenger in her vehicle were killed this weekend when she lost control of the vehicle she was driving and it struck another car early Saturday morning, according to the state Highway Patrol.

Three other people were seriously injured in the accident, according to the report by Trooper K.D. Williamson, who investigated it.

According to the report, Mary Bell Campbell, 23, of Emma Jean Road, St. Pauls, was driving a 2009 Pontiac passenger car south on Rozier Siding Road when she lost control, the vehicle overturned and then skidded into the northbound lane, hitting a 2009 Chevrolet passenger car broadside.

Campbell and Jonah Wilkins Jr., 49, of Power Lakes Drive, St. Pauls, died at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Margaret Ruth Blount, 52, of Martin Road, St. Pauls, was seriously injured in the accident, as were two passengers in the Pontiac, Jeffery Mason Locklear, 28, of Jasmine Lane, Lumberton, and Keyana Hammonds, 16, of Allendale Drive, Pembroke.

Campbell, Blount and Locklear were wearing seat belts, but Wilkins and Hammonds were not, according to the report.

The report said speed was a contributing factor in the accident, which occurred at 12:04 a.m.

Both vehicles were destroyed.
