LUMBERTON — Although he sees less trash now than before the Robeson County Clean & Green Committee began pushing programs and activities aimed at preventing litter, Commissioner Raymond Cummings says there’s a long way to go.

Clean & Green’s third year kick-off event is being held from 5:45 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Southeastern North Carolina Agricultural Events Center, just outside Lumberton, during which people will be encouraged to become more in tune with litter awareness and what can be done to help keep Robeson County litter free.

“We are excited about the kickoff of our third year,” said Cummings, the driving force behind the countywide clean-up effort. “We are trying to raise the visibility of our county’s litter problem. We are trying to get more buy-in from businesses, organizations, the school system and others. Hopefully, this kickoff will enhance our efforts.”

Unlike the kickoffs for the previous two years, which included cleaning up trash along county roadways, this year’s kickoff is featuring educational exhibits and a program providing information about litter awareness and what can be done to limit the problem of littering.

“This is a different type of approach that we are using to raise awareness of our litter problem,” said Cummings. “More than anything else this is an educational effort … . We have educational exhibits and invitations have been sent to business leaders, churches, the schools, various organizations and others. We hope to encourage them to help us with the monumental task of educating people. People are ultimately responsible for keeping the county free of litter and clean.”

Tuesday’s event includes a dinner catered by Candy Sue’s of Lumberton, a keynote address by Steve Yost, president of North Carolina’s Southeast, a regional economic development organization, and other presentations related to littering and what can be done to control the problem.

The public is welcome.

According to Clean & Green’s web page, Clean & Green is a voluntary effort to promote a clean and green, litter-free county through prevention education and enforcement. The group’s goals are to clean up the county, renew pride in the county, and bring communities and residents together.
