When Doris Sutton decided not to seek re-election to the St. Pauls Town Board, the board was guaranteed to have a new member. It could have had other new members after Tuesday’s election to fill the four Commissioner district offices, but three incumbents were returned to office. Two of those, David Ayers in D-1 and Sam McAllister in D-2, were unopposed, and voter turnout was predictably very light in the municipal elections in St. Pauls.

The new member is Gerard “Jerry” Weindel, who took Mrs. Sutton’s District 3 seat as a write-in candidate, turning back two other write-in candidates, Howard Burke and Ronald Smith.

In official results, Mr. Weindel, a businessman and the owner of Superior Industrial Flooring, received 39 votes. Mr. Burke, a former Commissioner, received 22 votes. Mr. Smith, a newcomer to politics, received 10 votes.

In District 4, incumbent Buck Terry narrowly defeated write-in candidate Howard Walters and newcomer Sue Reynolds. Mr. Terry received 55 votes while Mr. Walters received 48. Mrs. Reynolds received 9 votes.

In District 1, Mr. Ayers received 47 votes. Seven people voted for former Commissioner Jerry Jackson, and one person voted for Michael Owens.

In District 2, Mr. McAllister received 16 votes. There were no write-ins in his district.

In unofficial numbers, 77 voters of the 600 eligible voters voted in the North Precinct, where Districts 1 and 2 and small portions of District 3 are located.

In the South Precinct, where all of District 4 is located and where most of District 3 is located, voting was somewhat heavier. The vote counting, because of the write-ins, took a little longer than in the North and kept candidates and their supporters at the polling station until about 8:20 pm before Ethel McMillan announced the results.

Mr. Ayers, Mr. McAllister, Mr. Weindel and Mr. Terry will be sworn into four year terms of office at the next Town Board of Commissioners meeting on December 10. The public is invited to the swearing-in ceremony and to the meeting which will immediately follow.
